Business context

In interviews with students and the pedagogical team, it became clear that the previous app no longer kept up with the network's day to day — basic features like grades and tuition slips still depended on a separate, impractical web Student Portal. This meant lines at the registrar's office and the pedagogical department even for simple tasks, like issuing a document — one of the most felt pain points for students and units alike.

The original timeline was 4 months to deliver the app — but that timeline hid a bigger problem: to truly work, the app needed a backend robust enough to sustain thousands of active and graduated students, with all the rules of a highly regulated field. That backend didn't exist yet, and Grau's access to its own legacy system was limited. Sauter decided to invest first in rebuilding the backend — even knowing this would delay delivery — because building the app on a fragile foundation would mean rework in the medium term.

Deep dive

The student app is sustained by the same use of Claude Code described in the other two cases of the Grau Educacional project — legacy reverse engineering and data migration — now applied to building features on top of Sauter's centralized base.

On the frontend, the team built its own Claude Code skills to structure new screens within the project's standard architecture, automatically apply the Flutter best practices defined by the team, and review pull requests against the project's quality criteria — ensuring a screen written months later, by a different person, ships with the same consistency as the first one.

Claude Code also has direct access to the design file in Figma, reading measurements, spacing and component states straight from the source, with no manual reinterpretation.

This tooling gave the team room to deliver, beyond the original scope, the generation of requests and official documents directly through the app — the student requests and receives them without needing to visit the registrar's office, directly tackling one of the network's biggest sources of lines and in-person service.
